4 Beautiful Walks You Can Reach by Train from Herne Hill and West Dulwich

One of the greatest perks of living in Herne Hill or Dulwich is how quickly you can swap busy London streets for peaceful countryside. Thanks to brilliant train connections, you can be exploring green fields, ancient woodlands, and charming villages in no time — no car needed!

Here are four wonderful countryside walks you can easily reach by train, perfect for a weekend escape or even a spontaneous midweek adventure.

1️⃣ Petts Wood Circular (9km)

Catch a train from West Dulwich to Petts Wood (about 40 minutes) and step straight into nature. This 9km National Trust-protected circular trail winds through peaceful woodlands filled with birdsong and historic memorials hidden among the trees. It’s an easy, family-friendly route that makes you feel a world away from the city.

2️⃣ Shoreham to Otford (8km)

Start your day with a train from North Dulwich to Shoreham in Kent, a lovely little village surrounded by rolling hills. From there, walk through orchards and classic Kentish countryside to Otford. Once you’re ready, simply hop back on the train home. This linear walk is gentle, beautiful, and full of village charm.

3️⃣ Westerham Circular (10km)

From West Dulwich or Herne Hill, head by train to Westerham (via Oxted or Sevenoaks connections). This pretty market town is a perfect base for a 10km circular walk along the stunning Greensand Ridge, taking in panoramic views over the Weald and ancient oak woodlands. Don’t forget to reward yourself with a pint in one of Westerham’s traditional pubs afterward!

4️⃣ Eynsford Circular (10 - 14km)

Eynsford is another gem, easy to reach by train from West Dulwich or Herne Hill. This picturesque village, with its medieval bridge and riverside setting, is the gateway to a scenic circular route through the Darent Valley. Expect meadows, woodlands, and even a glimpse of Lullingstone Castle — a perfect countryside day out, and the return train is a breeze.

Living in this corner of South East London means you can enjoy these countryside adventures whenever you like, often in under an hour from your front door. No traffic, no stress — just fresh air, beautiful scenery, and a chance to unwind.

It’s easy to see why so many buyers are drawn to Herne Hill and West Dulwich for exactly these lifestyle benefits.

That’s why it’s so important to choose an estate agent who doesn’t just assume people know what makes the area great, but actually goes out and actively promotes it — like Greater London Properties does.

We make sure potential buyers truly see and appreciate everything this wonderful part of London has to offer.
