However, there is plenty going on in our area. I thought I’d share a few ideas for you and your families – some are right on our doorstep and some a little further afield.
February half term often arrives just when energy levels are at their lowest. The weather can be unpredictable, routines are out the window, and there’s a lot of time to fill. The upside? Families living in Dulwich, East Dulwich and Herne Hill are spoilt for choice when it comes to genuinely good things to do, even in the middle of winter.
One of the most reliable half-term favourites locally is the Horniman Museum and Gardens. With free entry to the museum and aquarium, it’s an easy win for families of all ages, and during school holidays there are usually extra trails, hands-on activities and workshops running throughout the week. It’s the kind of place where you can happily spend a whole morning without it feeling forced.
Closer to home, the Dulwich Picture Gallery runs bookable family workshops during half term, inspired by the current exhibitions. Even if you don’t book a session, the gallery offers free family trails that allow children to explore at their own pace, making it a calm but creative option when you want something a little slower.
For families with older children who need to burn off some serious energy, the Herne Hill Velodrome is always worth a look. Its family and youth cycling sessions are a brilliant way to try something different, and it’s one of those local landmarks that reminds you just how special this part of South London is.
Of course, there are days when staying warm and dry is the priority. The Picturehouse East Dulwich usually schedules family-friendly daytime screenings during the holidays, making it a simple, no-stress option when the weather turns.
If you don’t mind travelling a little further, the Southbank Centre’s annual Imagine Children’s Festival runs throughout February half term. It’s a mix of free events and ticketed performances, with theatre, music, storytelling and creative workshops, and it’s surprisingly easy to reach from East Dulwich or Herne Hill. It works well if you’re looking to turn one day of the holidays into something that feels a bit bigger.
February also brings Valentine’s Day into the mix, and for many local families that doesn’t mean grand plans so much as doing something simple together. Early evening meals in East Dulwich or Herne Hill, a cinema trip, or a weekend walk followed by cake in Dulwich Village can feel just as special without the pressure.
What really stands out during half term is how much there is to do without needing to plan weeks in advance or travel across the city. Dulwich, East Dulwich and Herne Hill offer a balance of green space, culture and community that makes family life work all year round — even during the trickiest school holidays.
At Greater London Properties Dulwich, we speak to families every day who choose this area not just for the homes, but for the lifestyle that comes with them. February half term may not be anyone’s favourite, but living locally certainly makes it easier.
Best Wishes,
Kate
