Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has delivered a speech on UK path to Net Zero. He has outlined changes to the government’s plans for making homes more energy-efficient.
In his speech Sunak said, Rishi Sunak said:
‘This country is proud to be a world leader in reaching Net Zero by 2050. But we simply won’t achieve it unless we change’.
‘We’ll now have a more pragmatic, proportionate, and realistic approach that eases the burdens on families’
Good News for Landlords on EPCs.
Before, the government had told landlords they needed to make their houses meet certain energy standards (EPC C rating) by 2025 for new renters, and 2028 for existing tenancies. But now, Sunak has announced the government are scrapping this policy.
This means landlords might not have to spend up to £10,000 on house improvements.
Instead of making it a rule, the government is just continuing to encourage landlords and homeowners to make these changes if they can. Due to the high costs of improving some of the older properties in London, we saw many landlords leaving the sector. There this is a great U-turn and will hopefully now retain some of those landlords for the future.
More Time to Change Boilers
Sunak also said that people will have more time to change their gas boilers to more eco-friendly options. Now, 80% of gas boilers should be changed by 2035. This is good because people won’t have to spend £10,000-£15,000 on new boilers in the next three years.
"No one will be forced to replace their boiler with a heat pump," Sunak said. "People will only need to change when their boiler is old and needs replacing – and not until 2035."
More Help to Change Boilers
Sunak is also making the Boiler Upgrade Scheme better.
This scheme helps people pay for replacing gas boilers with greener options by giving them grants.
Sunak has agreed to ‘Raise the Boiler Upgrade Grant by 50% to £7,500 to help households who want to replace their gas boilers with a low-carbon alternative like a heat pump’.
