When to Apply for Junior and Senior School Places – and What You’ll Need

If you’re a parent in Dulwich or Herne Hill, you’ll know that school applications can feel a little daunting. Both junior and senior school places are applied for through your local council, and the deadlines are firm – so it’s always worth getting organised early.

When to Apply

Junior schools (Year 3 entry) – Applications usually open in the autumn term of Year 2, with a January deadline.

Secondary schools (Year 7 entry) – Applications generally open at the start of Year 6, with an October deadline.

If you’re planning a move, now is a very good time – you’ll still be in time to catch the current admissions cycle.

What You’ll Need to Show the Council

Councils do ask for proof of address, and schools can be very strict about this. Typically, you’ll be asked for:
  • A council tax bill
  • A recent utility bill
  • A rental agreement or mortgage statement

Some schools are especially rigorous when it comes to verifying addresses. For example, The Charter School North Dulwich is known for checking carefully to ensure families genuinely live where they say they do. They will often investigate cases where parents rent a property close to the school but also own another home nearby. More details are on their website here.

Catchments Can Be Tight

In Dulwich and Herne Hill, catchment areas are famously small – sometimes just a handful of streets. That’s why it’s always worth double-checking the latest boundaries before making any decisions.

The good news? Kate and Rob Hill, founders of Greater London Properties (GLP), are always on hand with up-to-date information. They know the local schools, the catchments, and the property market inside out – so whether you’re buying or renting with schools in mind, you’ll have the guidance you need.

If you’re considering a move, now’s a great time to get settled before the deadlines roll around. And remember – Kate and Rob are always here for advice and help, whether it’s about schools, catchments, or finding the right home for your family.
